Waiting On Wednesday (52)

Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill @ Breaking the Spine. This is a once-a-week look at the book(s) I am anxiously awaiting release.

Take Me On by Katie McGarry

This book is to be released May 20th, 2014. It is the fourth book in the Pushing the Limits series.

Acclaimed author Katie McGarry returns with the knockout new story of two high school seniors who are about to learn what winning really means.

Champion kickboxer Haley swore she'd never set foot in the ring again after one tragic night. But then the guy she can't stop thinking about accepts a mixed martial arts fight in her honor. Suddenly, Haley has to train West Young. All attitude, West is everything Haley promised herself she'd stay away from. Yet he won't last five seconds in the ring without her help.

West is keeping a big secret from Haley. About who he really is. But helping her-fighting for her-is a shot at redemption. Especially since it's his fault his family is falling apart. He can't change the past, but maybe he can change Haley's future.

Hayley and West have agreed to keep their relationship strictly in the ring. But as an unexpected bond forms between them and attraction mocks their best intentions, they'll face their darkest fears and discover love is worth fighting for.

I have the first book in this series and I have heard absolutely nothing but good things about it. I have been told that if I am to read ANY young adult contemporary series that this needs to be on that list. I do plan to read it once I have more than just the first book in my possession. I am anxious to see what all the hype is about.

What are you "Waiting On" this Wednesday?

About the Author:
(Taken from author's Goodreads page)
Brandi lives in central Pennsylvania with her fur-ball cats (Onyx and Klepto), where she spends most of her time attached to her laptops, reading books, appeasing her sweet tooth, and watching TV for motivation.

Growing up in a haunted house inspired Brandi's fascination with the paranormal, so it only made sense that she'd write Urban Fantasy books for both teens and adults.

Brandi hasn't been lucky enough to meet her soul mate (yet), so she writes paranormal tales of those who have. Her stories combine magical elements with real-life issues, strong female characters, semi-old fashioned men and family values, woven together and told from an emotional, first-person perspective. She enjoys writing sweet stories that teach girls it's okay to speak your mind and be independent, career-driven, and not worry about fitting in to society's mold.

In addition to the BirthRight Novels, she also has four additional adventures she'll be writing over the next few years, so stay-tuned.

Tell Me Something Tuesday (32)

"Tell Me Something" Tuesday is a meme hosted by Heidi @ Rainy Day Ramblings

This week's question is:

Do you consider the publisher when selecting a book for review?

In a word? No.

Don't get me wrong, when I know that a particular publisher has granted me several books to read in exchange for reviews, I will normally make them a priority. I hate for publishers to think I am just doing book reviews so I can read books early and not give back for the resources and time the publishers spend on getting reading materials to me. If I haven't said it before, I say it now...

So, to answer the question, no, I don't consider the publisher when selecting a book to review. Normally I go by sheer luck of the draw. Whichever one catches my eye or is selected through random draw (yes, all my review books are numbered on a spreadsheet and I sometimes use a random number generator to make my selection. Too many good books and an inability to choose, I blame).

Do you consider the publishers in what book you read for review?

Book Blast with Giveaway: Life in the Palace by Catherine Green @toobusyreading @CatGreenWriter

Life in the Palace by Catherine Green
Publication date: February 18th, 2014
Genre: Young Adult / Fantasy / Paranormal

Synopsis:
"We need to talk," Tal said. Then I knew it was going to go badly. 'We need to talk' is the conversational equivalent of walking into your basement without turning on the light, on a dark and stormy night, when a known psychopath is on the loose. You might as well cut to the chase and slit your own throat.

Chloe Diaz assumed three things: that when Tal said that she was one of The People sent from heaven to maintain the cosmic balance, it was code for 'I'm a pamphlet distributing, incense burning, religious weirdo;' that the gorgeous Seth Wilks would never be her soul mate and that she'd never have to choose between them. Chloe was wrong.

Now the future of the world is in her hands, but what if the price is too great to pay?

Brief Description of Plot
After a lifetime in the shadow of her sister, Chloe is severely phobic of the chronically cool. Seth is everything she avoids; a pre-med philosophy major who works in a bar, plays in a band and is so good looking that grown women stare at him in the street. But it's hard to say no to your soul mate. Thinking she's maxed out her supply of destiny, Chloe settles down to enjoy the happily-ever-after.

Tal says that she's one of The People sent from heaven to maintain the cosmic balance. Chloe assumes this is code for 'I'm a pamphlet distributing, incense burning, religious weirdo.' Actually Tal's main extracurricular activity is fighting the forces of Oblivion. The People never need to hide what they are because no one ever believes them. Until Chloe does.

Chloe sets out to help Tal and The People as much as she can as an outsider. Seth says as long as no one wears their underpants on the outside Chloe can do what she likes. What he doesn't say is that he's also one of The People, although non-practicing. But as the Final Battle draws nearer, Chloe realizes it's time for Seth to go collect his regulation sword. The only thing standing in his way is her. Seth says he'll give up his place in heaven to stay with her. Chloe must choose between Seth's soul and her own happiness.

Praise for Life in the Palace

"An interesting take on the paranormal romance genre. ...While other books in the genre have unrealistic buy in to the acceptance of someone from the outside entering a "new world" Life in the Palace handled it from both the main character looking in and the dwellers of the Palace looking out at this person trying to enter their world. ...I am so happy to hear that there are more books in the series! -- Yonit on Goodreads

"I loved this world that Catherine Green created. I happily lost myself in the life & deep love between Chloe & Seth. ...I loved the attention to detail, the fleshing out of the world around them, the obvious growth of all the characters... Even the heartbreaking choices made at the end. Book two I cannot wait to read!" -- Ebon Darkmyth on Smashwords

"Loved it, great story line, fun characters and after reading it and thinking deeply about the duality of our lives, it made my prayers come alive!" -- Rebecca Wittenstein on Amazon.com

"This book introduces you to a whole host of characters that you want to meet in real life. ...The action keeps you reading, while the budding love between Seth and Chloe makes you breathless. A great read." -- Cypora Cohen on Amazon.co.uk

About the Author:
Catherine Green writes fantasy books featuring religious characters in a brazen attempt to make the people in faith communities seem less weird. Review: Defining Destiny by Deanna Chase @writerdeanna

Title: Defining Destiny

Author: Deanna Chase

Series: Defining Destiny #1

Publication date: February 16th, 2014

ISBN: 9781940299129

Genre: New Adult / Contemporary / Romance

Synopsis (according to Goodreads):
When destiny fails...

Singer-songwriter Lucy Moore thought her life was perfect. At just twenty-one, she's already met her soul mate and together they've landed a recording contract. But when her father dies and the love of her life betrays her in more ways than one, she returns home to pick up the pieces. On the shores of Mendocino, California, Lucy has some decisions to make. Should she start a solo career? Or should she leave it all behind for some semblance of normalcy in the quiet town she grew up in? And what about Seth, the tortured artist who always seems to be there when she needs him?

Seth Keenan has demons of his own. Eighteen months ago, he was involved in a horrific accident that he never talks about. His career as an accomplished oil-paint artist has been abandoned, replaced by the buzz of his tattoo gun. And women--well, he never sticks around for longer than a few hours of pleasure... until he meets Lucy. After one evening of listening to her seductive voice, he's pulled under. But what about the vow he made to never get close to anyone again?

In a world where everyone has one true soul mate, can these two find love in the arms of each other?

Review:
I received an e-copy of this book from the publishers on NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I have recently been finding myself dancing between contemporary and paranormal reads (young adult, new adult or... adult adult). This was an acquired read that I found interesting. I have noticed an influx in musical contemporary romance novels. Rocker romance is being the new fad. I had to check it out and this seemed a good book to dip my toe into that particular pool of popularity.

Lucy is reeling. She has just lost her father, has a mother who is way too involved in her personal life, a career that has lost all it's appeal, and a soul mate who lies to get his way and cheats. She needs a break from it all. She needs to get away and be by herself so she can remember what she loves about singing. She returns home after catching her soul mate in a compromising position with some groupies after a show and starts to pick up the pieces of her life. She reconnects with her best friend who begs Lucy to sing at her birthday party. It is there that she meets exotic and dangerously handsome, Seth.

Seth is known around town as the guy who lost his soul mate tragically and also as the small town's lady's man. Seth jumps from bed to bed not staying with a woman longer than one night of passion. He doesn't see the point. He doesn't want anyone else. He has really never had a woman catch his interest, until he meets Lucy. Not only is she beautiful, but she's quick witted and a fantastic singer. He is bewitched by her from the beginning. He starts to let his guard down more and more around the girl, despite knowing she already has a soul mate and that what they have is just a passing attraction that will burn out once she goes back to Caden.

Seth and Lucy struggle with their devastating pasts and their overwhelming future. In a world where you are destined to be with the other half of your soul, can two people still manage to make it work?

I liked Seth a little more than Lucy. Seth seemed to have a hard time with his past and coming to grips with everything but he made a really strong effort. Lucy was clearly not as strong and flip-flopped back and forth. In some ways this made the story more realistic. One expects the woman to be more emotionally driven while the man is determined and headstrong. I liked their chemistry together. They meshed well and I found myself rooting for them.

This book does not read like a typical contemporary romance. This is an entirely new world created where soul mates are common knowledge and everyone has one eventually. Once a person finds their soul mate they are destined to be with that person for the rest of their lives. It's a slightly dystopia-like feel to it without it being such a strong change that it can fall into that genre. At first I didn't realize it was supposed to be a new world way of thinking. I just thought the main characters were being cheesy when they kept talking about soul mates. But it was a worldwide accepted concept in the book. That makes a difference. Trust me.

Defining Destiny is unlike any book I have read before. It combines an element of fantasy with the classic contemporary genre to make something completely new and fresh. Deanna Chase did a fabulous job combining two uncomplimentary writing styles into a dynamite story of love, loss, and following one's heart.
