And it almost does, until Jagger Bateman pulls her from the ocean and breathes more than air into her lungs--he sets her soul on fire.
Jagger is enrolled in the country's toughest flight school. He's wickedly hot, reckless, and perfect for a girl looking to live life to the fullest. They're flying through dangerous territory--and one wrong move could make them crash and burn...
I received an e-copy of this book from the publishers on NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I had read Full Measures some time ago and it was one of the better books I had read in a long time. It was heart-wrenching and I was surprised that such a great story came out of a debut author. I had made a vow then and there that I would read anything she put out after that point. When Eyes Turned Skyward came across my NetGalley list I snapped up the chance to give it a gander. I didn't even know it was a companion novel to her first book featuring one of the supporting characters, Jagger. That just added to the desire to dig into this book as soon as possible.
Paisley doesn't know how to be normal anymore. She only knows how to live and watch her heart rate as closely as possible. There are so many things she is unable to do and the frustration is palpable. On a whim she decides to ditch her responsibilities and go to the beach with her best friend. That foray into rebellion turns into a nightmare as she nearly drowns in the strong current of the ocean. That was until Jagger jumped in and saved her life. Paisley finds herself drawn to Jagger and despite her growing attraction for him she tries to keep him firmly in the friend zone. But Jagger may not be content to stay in his designated little box.
Jagger has been running from his past for a long time. He is driven to be an Apache pilot and nothing less will do. He has sworn off women as distractions but Paisley threatens to upend that vow with her sweet smile and shy Southern belle ways. Jagger starts to wonder if the woman he rescued could be more than just a distraction. Maybe she could be his whole world.
Both Paisley and Jagger are hiding things from each other. Things that could shake their budding relationship to it's core.
When I first started reading this book I didn't know that it was a companion novel. I started seeing the names 'Ember' and 'Josh' and had to go back and see where I had heard those names before. I was flabbergasted to find out that they were the characters from Full Measures. After that I was even more enthralled with Jagger. I loved that there were little instances where Josh and Ember came back around to show how their lives were continuing on since the end of their book. I loved seeing a different side of Jagger than the funny playboy from the first book. I laughed. I cried. I got angry with the characters for not talking about their issues soon enough for my liking. I got completely invested in their world and felt like a lost two very good friends when the book ended. I hope that the next installment is about Grayson. He seems like he has a lot of issues cycling through his life and I'd love to see him find a woman to love.
Eyes Turned Skyward is a fabulous continuation in a world I would love to dive into. Hot military men and the women who love them.
